Aaaaah! Opening Day, a sacred holiday in Red Sox Nation, and the Rambler made his 8th consecutive appearance at the Fenway home opener. If you have never experienced Fenway on Opening Day, the Rambler strongly encourages you take the time to do so in 2008. Even without tickets to the game, the party atmosphere around the ball park is worth taking in.
Lots of highlights from this 14-3 laugher over the Seattle Mariners:
- All the Section 32 regulars made it through the winter in fine shape
- Members of the 1967 AL Champs were introduced during the pre-game ceremonies. Old sour puss, Carl Yastrzemski, failed to even make an effort to smile and wave to the fans in Section 32. He gave the impression left field in Fenway was the last place he wanted to be. Next time, stay home on the Long Island potato farm!
- Johnny Pesky is back for another season. The Rambler will keep beating a dead horse: retire his number now! He deserves it as much as Carlton Fisk who, by the way, played more games for Chicago than he did for the Red Sox
- Once again, the Green Mountain Boys of the Vermont Air National Guard made an impressive F-16 fly-over following Harry Connick Jr. singing America the Beautiful. What the heck happened to the National Anthem…….
- The Sox offense provided superb support to Josh Beckett by putting 2 touchdowns and 2 extra points on the board. J. D. Drew lined his first Red Sox HR into the CF bleachers. What a sweet swing this kid has.
- Beckett was awesome, going 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 8 strike outs on only 84 pitches
- Hard to believe Jason Varitek got 3 hits while Ichiro fanned 3 times. Talk about role reversal
The Rambler started off the season with 2 Fenway Franks, the greatest dogs in baseball.
The Earned Dog Average is 2.00, but will be in steady decline as the season progresses.
